Updated: Renaming RSS - A Brand Name or Geek Speak?

UPDATE: Microsoft says to chill out...
Microsoft Rethinks RSS Name Change
This is the part of the equation that is of great interest:
"Scoble says in an interview that because of Microsoft's "history"--which famously includes attempts to create proprietary implementations for standard technology--the company wants to be careful and "do the right thing" in regards to RSS."
---------

Interesting debate about companies splitting RSS up into renamed (and possibly recoded) segments.

Maintaining current standards (openly updated) vs. custom coding(privately held)?

Think "Microsoft RSS2" or "AOL Feeds V1.0" ...

And they don't co-mingle very well. Like IM's of today maybe?
